Living with Nuclear Power: A Report by Olivia Voyce.
Olivia grew up at St Chad's, was a member of the Confirmation class of 2007, and is now studying nuclear physics instrumentation at Liverpool University and working for her PhD on a novel airport security detector.
In 2016 Olivia was awarded a nuclear physics research internship at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA. Her research project was the study of spent nuclear fuel rods. This was a good preparation for her research trip this year: Researching the Lasting Effects of the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster. For this, she and her boyfriend, Josiah, collected soil samples from 13 sites across Europe.
If you would like to meet Olivia and learn more about this important piece of research do come to our next Science and Religion evening. No knowledge of nuclear physics is required. All will be explained on the night.
Questions and discussion are an important part of the evening. Science is knowledge and knowledge is power. When that means nuclear power, it's a thought to set us all thinking.
