This weekend people across the country will come together for a series of neighbourhood celebrations called the Great Get Together.

The Great Get Together is inspired by Jo Cox, the MP for Batley and Spen who was killed in June last year, with the aim of celebrating what we have in common and bringing communities closer together.

There’ll be three events across the constituency this weekend, the details are:

Saturday 17th June 1pm – 4pm: Friends of Ladybarn Park Community Fun Day & Fun Walk

Ladybarn Park, Parrs Wood Road/Mauldeth Road, M20 4XA

Saturday 17th June 1pm – 4pm: Love Withington Baths Great Get Together

Withington Baths, 30 Burton Road, M20 3EB.

Details can be found here.

Sunday 18th June Midday – 15:00: Chorlton Central Church banner unveiling

Chorlton Central Church, Barlow Moor Road, M21 8DF

There’ll be a picnic from midday onwards followed by the unveiling of a banner designed by local people to mark the day.

Commenting on the event Jeff said: “Jo famously said in her maiden speech that ‘we have more in common than that which divides us’ and the Great Get Together shows us that she was right.

Whether it’s to remember my friend and colleague Jo, to meet people for the first time who live round the corner, or to raise money for a local charity, get involved in the Great Get Together this weekend.”

It's been my great privilege to represent Manchester Withington in Parliament for the last two years. I've lived in this area all my life, and I know what a great place south Manchester is. But I also know how hard the government have made life for some of the most vulnerable people in our community over the past seven years.

Theresa May wants to pretend she called this election because of Brexit, but her real aim is to get a big Conservative majority so she can impose more cuts on our schools, NHS and public services. Only a strong Labour Party can stop her. A vote for Labour is a vote for investment in jobs, our local services and our childrens' future.

The Liberal Democrats have a record of breaking their promises, and spent five years propping up the Tories while they hit Manchester hard - they are no alternative.

I'm proud to work hard representing you in parliament, and I've not been afraid to stand up for what I believe in, and for the interests of our area. If I can help out in any way, please do get in touch.

Best wishes

Jeff Smith

Great to have the support of our newly elected Mayor Andy Burnham.

If I'm re-elected on June 8, we'll work together to protect our schools, invest in our police force and end rough sleeping in our city.

I've lived in this area all my life - I've seen how it's become harder to get a council house or a secure rental property.

This week I visited some of my old homes in the area to highlight Labour’s plan to build 1 million new houses & crackdown on bad landlords.

My pledges to you

Under the Tories, every school in south Manchester will lose out.  The worst affected schools, such as Parrs Wood and Chorlton High School, will lose almost £900 per pupil, the equivalent of 30 teachers (see below table for full breakdown).

I recently asked Theresa May what she would cut to balance school budgets, but she couldn’t answer. The only alternative to the Tories is a strong Labour Party committed to defending our schools.

I saw how a Labour government rebuilt many of the schools in our area, and as a former governor at several local schools I’m committed to our childrens’ future.  I will continue to fight against these cuts to ensure that every child in south Manchester gets a great education.
